Through the years, we have been conditioned to believe that patriotism has been equated with military, police, first responders, etc. In fact, the government had for years funded the patriotic display of military at NFL venues. Why do we limit the role of patriotism to those categories of people? Why are we not honoring teachers, engineers, social workers, etc?

[I’m not a politician and I usually do not post anything too political, but here is what I would do if I was a congressman voting on H.R. 1628 – the American Health Care Act of 2017.] The short version of where I stand on this healthcare bill is that I am voting “no.” The long version of why I am voting “no,” I will explain how certain aspects of this healthcare bill and the ACA before it, will be in…

[Photograph of Donald Trump by Martin Schoeller for TIME. Photograph of Hillary Clinton by Stephen Lam / Reuters. Montage added.] If this election has taught anything to anybody, it should be that we need to love one another, even if we disagree with each other. I have found that the only way people can change is for us to engage in an intentional conversation and genuine care for the other person, regardless of our differences. The beauty of this world is…

Why is that when some NFL players want to express how they feel about America during the National Anthem, they are condemned as though they do not have the right to feel the way they do? And why do these players marginalize America in a narrow perspective, offending those who love our country so much? What makes the United States so great is that we have a variety of thoughts that can be expressed in a variety of ways. We…

Perceptions from afar are usually off-base. Typically, they are formed with a picture painted by others who also perceive from a distance. Nothing beats the experience of learning first-hand, with your guard down, of knowing what things are really like. I remember people asking me if it was going to be safe living in Mexico, even by a few Mexican friends who have lived a good part of their lives in the US. They spoke about fears of being kidnapped…

FI-PrayingForYou

I have some mixed emotions after realizing last night there was all this news discussion based on a newspaper in NY that quoted Republicans about their thoughts and prayers. I won’t even quote the headline because of its intent. I’m not going to focus on the content of the story because we are not going to have a political debate here. This has sparked a debate in my head for which you have the pleasure, or regret, of reading. ha…

I want to walk through a thought process here and don’t want you to jump to any conclusions by the first few paragraphs of this post. The end result of this post will probably surprise you so stay with it. I’ve tried to keep an open mind with this subject and will provide my input as a US citizen and then as a Christian. Gun violence is all over the news. Murder rates are rising in many US cities. The right…

I will miss going to the mountains in the fall to see the change in the colors of the leaves on the trees. I will miss that about the Southern portion of the United States. Being in Mexico, there is not a lot of plush landscape even in the mountain areas where I live. The area where I live doesn’t greatly fluctuate in temperature so the seasons are not as obvious, visually. But in the South Carolina and North Carolina mountains, the scenery is beautiful…
