Most people who want to follow God have a difficult time letting go of experiences of the past. These experiences come up periodically to haunt them and no matter how hard they try, they cannot suppress them. So these experiences drag them down and take up space in their minds where God needs to be.

Then there are those who want to follow God, but their love for things of this world keep taking up their time so they never end up getting closer to God. They spend time and energy on frivolous things that really get them nowhere.

Eventually, these people’s beliefs start to change and their willingness to listen to God’s Spirit hardens. Truth becomes unimportant and dignity starts to vanish. What is true about God becomes just a fairy tale to them.

I’ve heard people (and know some) who sooner or later give up on their prior beliefs in God and start believing in whatever they want to about Him that is convenient. If you like to do something that is contrary to Him/Scripture, you’ll one day end up believing that it is OK. Your beliefs will become all your own and you will become your own god.

“You shall have no other gods before Me.” Exodus 20:3

Have you been there? Are you there now? If you can recognize any of these situations listed above, then you understand how easy it can be to fall away from God. If you are there now and can recognize the downward spiral in your life and want to change it, there is good news. The Spirit of God is still working with you and there is a way to get back on track.

When we hold Christ close to our heart, meditate on His sacrifice for us, and keep focusing on His Word for understanding and light, He will take care of the idols and gods in our lives. God can continually recreate us. We just need to get close to Him for Him to do that. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

“After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon. When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained.” -1 Samuel 5:1-4

Draw closer to God and let Him handle the idols and false gods in our lives. He will cause them to fall flat.
