I was watching a video this morning of Louis Armstrong singing, “What a Wonderful World,” and it had me thinking quite deeply about life. The song reminded me of the current atmosphere, not only in politics, but also with life in general. There is a lot of Thanksgiving that needs to be instilled into our hearts and into our minds.

People are ultra focused on everything that is wrong around us. There is constant criticism of everyone’s move. This is prevalent by just turning on the news. Why is it so hard for people to see what is good?

As I listened to the words and watched the expressions on Louis’ face, I realized more than ever that we have a choice on our outlook on life. In 1967, Louis certainly had a lot to sing about that could have been negative. However, the song reminded me that we must take in and acknowledge the good things in life or we will just miss it.

Jesus reminded the disciples this too. When at the home of Simon the leper, a woman came and poured a very expensive perfume onto his head as a sign of gratitude towards him. The disciples, still learning to look at the beauty in life, rebuked the act of the woman in their presence by lifting up those that are not around them, saying, “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.” Matthew‬ ‭26:9‬.

Jesus, always looking for the beautiful in people, responded, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me.” Matthew‬ ‭26:10‬. Jesus was teaching to look at the beauty of the act instead of being indignant about it. Furthermore, he reminded the disciples to look at what they have and be thankful for what they have. “The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me.” Matthew‬ ‭26:11‬.

In this way, Jesus was not discounting the fact that the poor can be helped. He was noting that life can be beautiful when you look around in the present time.

So go ahead, choose today to look at the beauty that surrounds us in our present time. Too much of it gets lost in all the noise. We have a choice, not to ignore everything that is wrong with the world, but to see the beauty that exists around us and take it in – that we may have a more enjoyable life.

Happy Thanksgiving.

What a Wonderful World

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They’re really saying I love you
I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They’ll learn much more than I’ll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world.
